Powerful Prayer Devotional – You Can Pray
Friday we talked about Powerful Prayer Devotional – God’s Word in the Devotional. Today, we talk about Powerful Prayer Devotional – You Can Pray. This chapter speaks about using prayer as your “daily dose of God’s grace” in a world full of things to worry about. You worry not only about yourself, but your family like your spouse and children as they go to work and school entering the outside “world.”
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
God the Help of Those Who Seek Him
A Song of Ascents.
121 I will lift up my eyes to the hills—
From whence comes my help?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
God’s Word in Prayer:
So, not only can you pray. but you need to pray. God’s word or Scripture in prayer is your “armor” as you battle the evil one in the world. God’s word protects you and your family in the midst of the daily battle.
In my busy world with a long “To Do List”, sometimes prayer takes a backseat. I skip morning because it is so hectic and I have so many emails in my two, now four mailboxes since I changed my emails to each blog separately. I know, I know, but it had to be done. Or I am so tired by my evening prayer time (11 pm) that I am dozing off during prayer which I am sure God doesn’t appreciate.
I think, “I’ve got this, God.” and I picture Him shaking His head with a grin on His face. He’s thinking, “There she goes, again.” But before long, I come running back in tears begging for forgiveness and help because I couldn’t do it on my own. God’s Grace is Great!
Some of us have a “gift” or knack of feeling what others are feeling. The fancy word for this is being an empath derived from the word empathetic, understanding what another is feeling even though you are not going through the same situation. I have this gift and am called to pray for those whom God places on my heart to pray for. I also am on a Prayer Ministry for my old church, Christ the Cornerstone in St. Petersburg, FL and still actively pray for needs on the group on Facebook.
The church calls us Prayer Warriors and it is no easy task. you are called upon at all hours of the day or night be it for minor or very major matters. There is an excellent article titled The God Who Cares on Bible.org that gives multiple OT and NT scriptures showing God’s repeated care for His people. It is an excellent resource of collected Scriptures showing God’s attributes. So if you have this gift also, remember how awesome but filled with responsibility it is because you are called to stand in the gap for others to pray for them to God so their needs are heard by God.
One way to know that you are called to be a Prayer Warrior is that people seek you out frequently asking you to pray for them. The other is the “empath” way where you feel the needs of others even without them asking and can speak with them about what their needs are to clarify their needs before taking them to the throne of God.
Yes. It is a gift of God but an awesome responsibility as well. Jesus through the Holy Spirit helps us to pray for those placed on our hearts and in our minds to pray for them. Honor God with your gift.
Growing in Prayer…
1.Until the next blog post, continue to pray daily for at least 15-30 minutes using one of the suggestions given last week (see 7/5/16’s Post).
2.If you have not been in the habit of praying daily don’t become discouraged because it takes 3 weeks to build a habit. Try setting an alarm on your phone or watch to remind you to pray. My alarm is set for 11 am and 11 pm so I don’t miss my scheduled prayer times. Do I delay at times? Yes, sometimes up to an hour, but I still pray.
3.Be willing to try several different methods until you find a “fit” for you and your lifestyle.
4.Pray about whether you have the gift of interceding or praying for others and their needs. Ask God to let you know. He will answer you.
Thank You for presence and care during prayer and during writing this post. Thank You for showing us how important Your Word is to us as we pray and lift the needs of ourselves and others to You. For those of us who have the gift of prayer warrior or prayer intercession, we thank You for this gift. Thank You for Your Scriptures, Your HolyWord, and the many different interpretations of Your Word. Thank You for all of the commentaries and dictionaries that have been developed to help us to understand Your Word. And most of all, Thank You for Jesus and the Holy Spirit that help us to understand. Help us to seek you quietly and listen to you in the quiet before we begin to make our requests, confessions, praises, and gratitudes. Help us to pray as You would have us to pray. Help us to desire to grow closer to You every day.
In Jesus Name I Pray, Amen.
