Today, I want to share Insomnia Repost from a friend and blogger, Tessa, who blogs on Advocate for Mental and Invisable Illnesses. Her blog describes life as a person with Bipolar Disorder and I asked her if I could share her post, Insomnia. According to NIMH Bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness) is a neurobiological disorder that severely affects approximately 5.5 million Americans age 18 or older, or 2.6 percent of the adult population. An estimated 51% of individuals with this condition are untreated in any given year.
Although there is no cure for bipolar disorder, it can be treated effectively. “Proper treatment helps many people with bipolar disorder—even those with the most severe forms of the illness—gain better control of their mood swings and related symptoms,” according to the NIMH. “But because it is a lifelong illness, long-term, continuous treatment is needed to control symptoms. However, even with proper treatment, mood changes can occur. Treatment consists of medication therapy with antidepressants and mood stabilizers as well as psychotherapy and at time electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
If we were having coffee… and I was sharing my today, I’d tell you that it has been a rough week for me. I am struggling with depression this week with feelings of restlessness and wandering mind and difficulty sleeping. I can’t seem to concentrate very well and added to that is the fact that I found out my rescue dog, Guinness, has cancer. I brought him home to care for him and nothing aggressive will be done. I’m just going to keep him comfortable. He has several skin tumors and I don’t want him to go through surgery if it won’t cure the disease. I just want him pain-free.
If we were having coffee… I’d ask how your week has been for you? I’d also remind you that God loves you every day, not just because it is Sunday. God is my mainstay in all my troubles, for sure. I don’t know what I would do without Him. My favorite verse is “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 45:10)
If we were having coffee… I’d tell you my weekend was quiet with the grandchildren playing and having a sleepover in the living room with their parents last night. They had popcorn and rented “Utopia” and were up until 1 am. Not me, though…I was in bed long before that but woke up at 5 am when the sun was just coming up. All was quiet and just me and the cat, Elvis were watching the birds at the birdfeeder out my window.
