Finding Faith in Fear

Finding faith in fear is challenging in the best of times. Fear is rarely experienced in the best of times so finding faith in the midst of fear is a miracle of God. Faith is defined as a mysterious place where we find courage to believe in what we cannot see and in so doing can let go of our uncertainty. Hebrews 11:1 (ESV) says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” The role of a leader is to step into the unknown time and time again. with trust and faith. Fear can not exist with faith. The two contradict each other. Your are either afraid and living in fear and the unknown or you are at peace and living in faith in the unknown trusting God with the outcome.

So what can you do?

  1. Listen to yourself. What is happening inside? Listen to your thoughts and feelings and compare them to the facts (real not imagined).
  2. Investigate. If you are feeling a lot of fear, investigate the cause of it…facts, please. Describe the fear in detail including characteristics and qualities. Don’t avoid it or stay in denial about it.
  3. Make a choice. With the facts at hand and having evaluated your thoughts and feelings, choose faith or fear as your attitude.

What the Bible Says…

When we are gripped with unbelief and become believers, we still have fears that we need to deal with that were part of our character prior to being saved. These fears may have been with us for years, even since childhood. Faith is not something that we produce ourselves but is a gift from God. It is described as a “fruit” or characteristic which is produced in our lives by the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 2:8–9 (ESV)For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,not a result of works so that no one may boast.”
Galatians 5:22 (ESV)22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,”

The Bible also reminds us that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. By hearing God’s Word frequently, it becomes part of us, our inner soul and spirit.

Romans 10:17 (ESV)17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

David, the Psalmist after God’s own heart, wrote many psalms revealing his growing trust and faith in God. There are so many that I can’t begin to list all of the verses but just search the Psalms and you will see how much David loves God and trusts and has faith in him even when he is afraid. His faith overcomes his fear.

Remember that when you are faced with a choice between fear and faith, faith is the better choice every time. Choose faith.
