Sharing Myself – #Weekend Coffee Share

If we were having coffee, I would try sharing myself and my week with youI would acknowledge that this is really late as it is Monday evening after dinner, long past the weekend coffee share, and I am drinking a diet coke instead. It’s been a really rough week and weekend for me. First, my computer has not been working well and has been down a couple of times. Seems the mousepad on the laptop is sticking and not working and no matter what I do to clean it, I can’t get it to function much better except for an hour or so and then it is back down again.

If we were having coffee or diet coke, I would tell you that I have been ill also. I have a flare of my fibromyalgia with lots of pain in my back and abdomen and hips. Add to that my usual pain I have from arthritis in my knees and hips and all I want to do is take my pain medication and sleep to escape the pain. It’s not much of a life when I am having a flare up like this so I just take it a day at a time, pray, take my medication and sleep and blog what I absolutely have to blog.

If we were having coffee or diet coke, I would tell you that part of the reason for the flare up is emotional because I found out last week that I have to foreclose on my home in Florida. My ex-husband and his friend, John have been staying there but it has developed a serious leak under the slap part of the house and will cost way too much for me to fix it. This is expecially true because I am losing $1100/month from my disability next month so all I will have to live on is my Social Security check monthly. I have a small amount in savings but that is just for emergencies to pay for medicine at the end of the year when Medicare won’t pay because I’ve hit the gap period. So my gift to myself is a flare up of my fibromyalgia.

If we were having coffee or diet coke, I’d tell you I need to keep this short tonight since both my computer and I are not doing too well right now. I hope that your week has been a pleasant one and things are going well for you.

See you soon.

Above All Be Compassionate

Be Compassionate…

Tonight’s topic is “Above All Be Compassionate.” This week is the yearly anniversary for 1000 Voices Speak for Compassion. I wrote a post on my other blog, Susan’s Creative Writing and Poetry, yesterday dedicated to that anniversary and how I have changed since first writing about compassion. One thing I became aware of was that I was always compassionate and empathetic. Compassion is defined as Deep awareness of the suffering of another accompanied by the wish to relieve it.” Compassion is a feeling accompanied by a desire for an action to relieve suffering. People can be taught to be compassionate, but it is best taught while young as children while they are still developing their personality characteristics.

Example of Compassion…

Some people are born with a natural tendency to this end and demonstrate it at an early age especially toward animals and people that are hurting. An example that I can give is that I was having a bad day on Sunday with lots of pain in my back and my knees and hips. I had taken a shower hoping the hot water would help me feel better, but the standing had exacerbated my pain and I was crying when I got out of the shower. I carefully got myself to my couch/bed/lounge and called out to my granddaughter, age 6. When she came in, she could see I was crying and I asked her to bring me my towel for my hair (it is very long). She brought it to me and handed me some tissues. Her brother, age 4, came over and patted my hand and told me that he hoped I felt better soon. Indeed, after sitting for about 15 minutes, resting, I did feel better and called them both in to show them that I was better and to thank them for their help and compassion.

Benefits of Compassion…

It is not just a benefit to the one receiving compassion, but also it benefits us as well because we experience the good feelings of being able to help decrease someone’s suffering. Also, our own suffering is diminished with helping someone else’s suffering. Just imagine a world where we looked beyond ourselves and gave compassionately to others freely with care and integrity. How different our world would be! Compassionate love and care expressed toward others who suffer. That is what we are each called to do in our world.

The final point I want to make about being compassionate is that it begins with first being compassionate toward yourself. You must show yourself the same love, kindness, forgiveness, care, and compassion that you will show to others. Without learning to receive your own compassion, how will you be able to give compassion to others? You must first love your God, then love yourself, and finally love and show compassion to others. The steps will come easily as long as you love your God first.

Take care and above all else be compassionate.

Share Your World – 2016 Week 7 Feb 16, 2016

Share Your World – 2016 Week 7

This week I’m participating again in Share Your World with 4 questions and a Bonus question to allow you to get to know me a little bit. Here goes… Susan…

1.What are you a “natural” at doing?

Most of my life I was a natural at nursing. I am a retired RN after 32 years of working. Now, however, I would say that I am a natural at writing, especially poetry and flash fiction. I enjoy all types of writing though and I am very good at doing my own editing.

2.Would you prefer a one-floor house or multiple levels?

Let me preface this answer with the fact that I live with my daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren, ages 4 and 6. We live in a two-story home and it works for me because I am in the master suite on the first floor at the back of the house. I have severe arthritis and fibromyalgia and can’t climb stairs except in an emergency so everyone else is upstairs to sleep and I have my own large living/bedroom and bathroom downstairs so it is perfect. If I lived alone, which I can’t anymore, it would have to be an apartment on the ground floor or a single level home.

3.What was your favorite subject in school?

I really loved any subject in school all through school except math. I hated math. My very favorite was English Literature and American History.

4.Complete this sentence: If only the rain…

STOP. It has been raining straight for 3 days and we have seen no sunshine. Of course, the week before was worse because it snowed all week so they closed schools all week…mind you, it was less than 4 inches but when it snows in Nashville, the whole city comes to a standstill. They are promising us sun and 60 degrees this weekend. I hope they keep their promise.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am grateful that my granddaughter, who was out of school last week because of snow, is back in school this week. This week I am looking forward to graduation from my Intermediate Haiku Class on All Poetry.

This week I am looking forward to graduation from my Intermediate Haiku Class on All Poetry. Also less rain and more sun and warmer weather for the weekend.
