Study The Book of the Bible – Hebrews
Use the SOAP method to study a verse that speaks to you from each chapter.
Hebrews 8:10 (NIV)
10 This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel
after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds
and write them on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
(I would recommend that you read all of Chapter 8 so that you can put the above verse into context.)
BIBLE (Version NIV)
SCRIPTURE: (Write it out): Hebrews 8:10: This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
OBSERVATION (What I learned): Chapter 8 speaks about the new covenant from God because the old covenant of the Law had failed. The old covenant to begin with was the 10 Commandments and Mosaic Laws, followed with many other Levitical laws that were added in the book of Leviticus. The new covenant refers to Jesus who will sacrifice his life for eternal salvation for us and places the Laws on our hearts and minds permanently. To understand what the new covenant will be, you need to read all of Chapter 8 because it talks of the continual sins of God’s people with the old covenant.
APPLICATION (to my life): I am reminded that Jesus is the greatest high priest. I am thankful that the old Law was replaced by the new covenant although I regret that it took the death of Jesus to bring it about. This chapter and verse gives me a better understanding of the difference between the old covenant and the new covenant and makes me much more able to understand the yearning that exists in all of us to “fill that hole inside our soul.”
Prayer (use scripture as a guide): Jesus, Chapter 8 speaks about Your new covenant and how it differs from the old covenant of the Law. You were blameless and sacrificed Your life for me so that I could be saved through the new covenant. Lord, continue to guide me. Remind me when I am not being obedient to Your word or the Holy Spirit’s directions. Thank you for Your words in Hebrews. I praise You, Jesus, for You are the new covenant and I praise and thank you for your sacrifice for me.
