This morning, I chose a quote that has an unknown author. I researched it on Google and it has been on lots of blogs, articles, Facebook and Twitter as well as Pinterest. It is a quote/saying that has been around for some time and you may have already heard it but it will be interesting to review it.
The quote I chose is:
“What if you woke up today with only the things you thanked God for yesterday?” ~ Unknown
This saying or quote with an unknown author is short and simple to say, but when given more thought, the meaning is quite profound. The quote has a “What if” premise like you are imagining, making believe of a situation. So, let me play the game for a few minutes. First, everything that we have belongs to the Lord or God, your Higher Power. Let me think about last night and my gratitude.
I said grace at dinner time and thanked God for the meal and making the day a good one…very generic and simple. I took care of my grandchildren, ages 3 and 6 while their parents went on a dinner date. I remember a prayer/thanks for the kids being good and not getting too rambunctious. They played some but mostly watched a movie until they fell asleep on my couch. I remember thanking God for that. I prayed/thanked God for my daughter and son-in-law that they have a nice time out for the evening and have safe travel. I remember that as well. I fed the dog, Guinness and the two cats, Cleo and Elvis Catstello, and thanked God for them, their health and companionship. That is all I remember giving thanks for.
The things that I didn’t give thanks for included my finances (they have been tight this month, but I am getting by) and my transportation (an older car but it works well). I forgot to thank God for my health (Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, Depression-all managed well). I didn’t thank God for other things and people in my life…friends, other family members, and other blessings like a nice sunny day, temperature moderate in the mid-80’s. I didn’t thank God that the Republican Debate was over without bloodshed…I really should have thanked Him for that because I am a Democrat. Go Hillary Clinton…
Suffice it to say, I forgot to give thanks for lots of things. How about you? Would you awaken with scant to show for your thanks and gratitude or would you wake up fully blessed and having expectations of even more blessings?
- My awareness of where I fall short on giving thanks and gratitude.
- That my God is so forgiving of my falling short of the goal of gratitude.
- For my grandkids and pets and a quiet evening with them.
- My health and that my illnesses are being managed so well.
- That I have health insurance even if it falls short on covering some of my medications at a lower cost.
Good night for me since it is 3:12 am.
