This is a flash fiction challenge where we provide you with a new photo each week, and the first sentence of a story. My challenge is to finish the story using 100-150 words, not including the sentence provided.

Today’s photo and opening line were inspired by fellow writer Phylor of Phylor’s Blog!

Wolves On The Hunt

“They followed the buffaloes and their babies along the trail heading into the woods.”

Perhaps one of the young would fall behind or even one of the old males that were part of protecting the females and the young might tire from the migration and lag behind. The wolve’s vivid yellow eyes darted from the mothers to the young and would finally rest on the older males.

They hadn’t eaten for several days and cold weather was upon them. The pack could not afford a mistake. There had to be a kill tonight. Each one of the pack crept silently along trailing the old males and looking for a break, a weakness in the bison herd. All the wolves needed was one chance break in the bison’s routine migration.

Suddenly, there came a great rush of male bison from behind them, trampling everything in sight. There would be no bison kill tonight.
