A Safe Place

Joshua always ran to his safe place when things got bad at home. Tonight, things was real bad. Daddy comed home in a real funk about somethin’ and started takin’ it out on him. First, the yellin’,  then the belt across his back.  When daddy tried punchin’ him in the head, Joshua ducked and ran.

He was safe now ‘til he wents back, that is. He just kept a walkin’ payin’ no mind to what was gonna happen later. Joshua lost track a time watchin’ the birds flyin’ by the river. Then it got dark.

He didn’t wanna go back but there was nowheres else to go. Slowly, Joshua made his way back home. Ya could hear the screamin’ when ya got close. Daddy and ma were at it agin. Maybe this time he woudn’t get a beatin’.

“Where’s yous been at? Didn’ I’s tell ya to go to bed?” his daddy yelled, “Now, you’re gettin what’s comin’ to ya.”
